The first hospital pharmacy in America opened in 1752. ๐จ๐
-
-
The Pennsylvania Hospital was founded in 1751 in Philadelphia which at that time was the fastest growing city in the colonies. It primarily took care of the poor and homeless suffering from physical and mental illnesses.
Benjamin Franklin himself played a key role in bringing the vision for this hospital to life, and is reported to have said, “I do not remember any of my political maneuvers, the success of which gave me at the time more pleasure.”

Refresher! Do you remember what UVA and UVB stand for?
-
-
They are the two harmful ultraviolet rays the sun omits.
โ๏ธ Ultraviolet A (UVA) is the one responsible for aging the skin
โ๏ธ Ultraviolet B (UVB) is the one responsible for burning the skin
When exposed to both for too long that is when we get damage to our skin that can lead to cancer and premature aging.
-
-
That is why it is so important to pick a sunscreen and/or makeup that protects against both UVA and UVB! Broad spectrum sunscreen is the common term used for a sunscreen that protects from both UVA and UVB.
-
-
Be sure to check your phone's weather app to get the daily UV Index (when the number is between 4-13 you want to make sure to apply sunscreen, this is when you are most likely to burn in the sun) This can be a very helpful way to know when it is a safe time to be out in the sun.
โก๏ธโก๏ธ scroll to see how it changes throughout the day โ๏ธ

Does wearing sunscreen all the time cause me to have vitamin D deficiency?
-
-
Sunscreens prevent ultraviolet light from reaching the skin. UV light is responsible for vitamin D synthesis in our bodies. Typical sunscreen use is likely not responsible for vitamin D deficiency.
-
-
It is possible sunscreen use for extensive periods of time can reduce vitamin D. However, most people get adequate vitamin D from foods and supplements. Therefore sunscreen is likely not the cause of vitamin D deficiency, but could be contributing to it.
-
-
If you have concerns about your vitamin D levels you can always request a vitamin D lab from your primary care provider to ensure you are not deficient.

Happy Fridayโจ
The beloved Coppertone Girl was created in 1956 by Joyce Ballantyne.
The illustrator used her 3 year old daughter, Cheri, as the model!
In a recent study, the American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD) reported that 67% of respondents incorrectly believe SPF 30 is twice as protective as SPF 15. So what does SPF really stand for and mean?
-
-
What does SPF stand for? โ๏ธ๐ค
Sun Protection Factor (SPF): is how long a person can stay in the sun before the UVB rays can burn the skin.
-
-
What does the number mean?
The number does NOT stand for minutes. An SPF of 30 means it will take 30 times longer for your skin to burn then it would without sunscreen. For example, if your skin burns within 10 minutes, then applying SPF of 30, then your skin should take 30 times longer to burn.
-
-
However, sunscreen starts to lose effectiveness over time, so it is not linear. It is recommended to reapply every 2 hours
-
-
Does SPF of 30 have twice the protection as a SPF 15?
No! SPF of 15 blocks 93% of all incoming UVB rays, SPF of 30 blocks 97% of all UVB rays, and SPF 50 blocks only a negligible more at 98%. No sunscreen can block 100% of the sun’s UVB rays.
-
-
AAD recommends applying a minimum of SPF 30.

A little more sunscreen history…
-
-
The first sunscreen (like we know it today) was invented by Benjamin Green, a pharmacist and airman in the 1940’s during World War II.
-
-
He invented a heavy and smelly greasy substance called “red vet pet” that he used to protect his skin during the war.
-
-
After the war he perfected the ingredients to what would eventually become Coppertone suntan cream.

-
Did you know?
In 1938 a Swiss chemistry student, Franz Greiter, suffered a burn while climbing Mount Piz Buin and this started his quest to invent sunscreen.
-
-
It was not until 1946 he created a brand Piz Buin that created a sunscreen product called Gletscher Creme (Glacier Cream) that is still sold today!

Happy June! โ๏ธ
Now that the pools are officially open we thought we would talk about the importance of sunscreen!! โ๏ธ๐งด
-

We try our best not to repeat topics but the one topic worth repeating every year is skin protection! Being fair skinned and seeing first-hand friends and family who have been affected by skin cancer; I think it is worth repeating yearly. Some posts this month may be new information while others may be a good refresher!
-
-
So why is skin protection so important? See the important facts below from the American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD).
โ๏ธ Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States
๐งด Women have higher incidence of skin cancer
โ๏ธ Nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) incidents are increasing in people younger than 40 years old
๐งด Invasive melanoma is projected to be the 5th most common cancer in women and men
โ๏ธ Almost 20 Americans die every day from melanoma
๐งด The 5 year survival rate for melanoma that is detected and treated before it spreads (to the lymph nodes) is 98%
โ๏ธ The 5 year survival rate for melanoma that is spread to lymph nodes and other organs is 23%.

This is one of the oldest pharmacies in the world, which opened in 1317. It is called the Old Pharmacy in Franscican Monastery, apparently friars were some of the first pharmacists.

The pharmacy has survived sieges, earthquakes and even a plague! This pharmacy is still open today.

Did you know 74% of men and only 58% of women feel comfortable asking for a promotion?
-
-
To finish off our women’s month we thought we would touch on disparities women face in the workforce. Studies show women will only apply for promotions and positions if they are 100% qualified and men will apply if they meet only 60% of the qualifications.
-
-
So ladies, let’s start asking for that promotion and raise BEFORE you consider yourself “ready”!
We need more women pushing for promotions to ensure women in more leadership roles.

Is Botox a gateway drug?
-
-
For some, YES. But instead of a gateway to plastic surgery or “fake” beauty standards, my patients enjoy Botox as a gateway to increased confidence and a more positive sense of self!
-
-
Neuromodulators (i.e., Botox, Dysport, etc.) are injectable medications that relax dynamic wrinkles and prevent fine lines—allowing many to take back control over early signs of aging!
-
-
Onset is less than a week, full effect occurs around 2 weeks, and duration starts to fade by 3 months, with complete return of movement by 4 months. Patients that choose a “partial dose” for cost or appearance preferences will experience movement earlier.
-
-
Cost is based on # of units ($10-25/unit) averaging $1600-3000 per year over 3-4 treatments per year.
-
-
Treatment of the upper face: forehead, frown, and crow’s feet wrinkles have high satisfaction and few adverse effects which include transient pinpoint bruising and mild intra-procedure discomfort. The most common side effect is temporary facial asymmetry which is managed conservatively. People should avoid these medications if they form keloids, have a neuromuscular disorder, or are allergic to constituents in the medication.
-
-
Exciting new treatment targets include jawline narrowing, the overly gummy smile, lip “flipping”, early neck “banding”, and much more!
-
-
This is exciting and risks are limited, but it is important to understand that fillers differ significantly from Botox in risk profile, technical considerations, cost and duration. This education helps patients avoid a “gateway”, or ill-advised, mishap. Just remember, NOT all “injectables” are the same — and you’ll do great!

Meet Elizabeth Wick, M.D! โจ
Dr. Elizabeth Wick is a plastic surgeon that has chosen to focus on issues of the face:
including rhinoplasty (nose reshaping) ๐๐ผ
hair restoration ๐จ๐ผ๐ฆฒ๐ฑ๐ฝโ๏ธ
and facial rejuvenation ๐ ๐ผโ๏ธ๐๐ผโ๏ธ
She lives with her husband and 2-year-old son in Town and Country, MO. Elizabeth completed her residency at Washington University in St. Louis before serving as a Clinical Instructor at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, where she taught students techniques in advanced rhinoplasty and facial reconstruction. She returned to St. Louis for family and the opportunity to provide her community with cutting-edge treatment focused on hair loss and facial cosmetic concerns.
-
-
She is passionate about this choice because, despite having multiple publications and presentations on rhinoplasty and facial rejuvenation, the most rewarding part of her work is still the emotional connection with patients over cosmetic concerns. Whether concerns are related to aging, cancer, scarring, or congenital issues; changes in facial appearance and hair loss cause the greatest amount of anxiety and injury to social confidence.
-
-
Thankfully, recent innovations in topical and local hair treatments are aimed at prevention just like the last decade has seen with Botox and “fillers”.
-
-
Dr. Wick will share the safe do’s and don’ts regarding these treatments; hopefully empowering women of all ages to feel more in control of their appearance and decisions, regardless of whether they choose to seek treatment.
